The Toasted Walnut is a café/restaurant in downtown Bowmanville, run by owner Nicole McGarry and her friendly staff. This is the place to go when you want to know each other by name. There is one word that describes The Toasted Walnut, and it’s “Fresh”.
Meet Nicole McGarry
Growing up in Port Perry, Nicole has always had a passion for cooking, baking and presentation. She learned all about baking, customer service and business from her years of experience in high school, working at 'The Pantry Shelf'. Starting her career in hospitality at Georgian College and then carrying over to Durham College’s Small Business and Entrepreneurship program - she learned the skills that would become the backbone of The Toasted Walnut’s success.
She gives a lot of credit to her mother Debbie, who inspired Nicole with many memories of baking and cooking while growing up. You can see Debbie’s touches all over the cafe, with her decorative skills that gave The Toasted Walnut it’s iconic rustic feel. Nicole has always had the drive to open her own bistro, she found the perfect space in downtown Bowmanville, on the main street, in 2013.
The Toasted Walnut is not just a cafe, it’s a full restaurant and catering company, all in one. From full breakfasts and lunches to the homemade pastries - there is something for everyone. Everything is made fresh in-house (yes, even the salad dressings!) and the desserts are made every morning before the cafe opens. Get there early for warm baked goods, straight from the oven.
This unique environment is perfect for the sweet tooth as well as the health lover, with delicious salads and fruit smoothies. Constantly experimenting with new tastes and flavours, the Toasted Walnut’s menu and daily specials are worth repeated visits.
What are the favourites at The Toasted Walnut?
The Toasted Walnut Salad, a bed of spinach topped with dried cranberries, fresh strawberries, feta cheese and toasted walnuts (of course), dressed with a homemade honey citrus vinaigrette.
The Mango Curry Butternut Squash Soup, served with an herb and cheese scone (made every morning), paired with an in-house homemade mango chutney.
The Toasted Walnut Butter Tart, made with a secret recipe!
